Summer Student - Sports Researcher and Archivist
The Cobourg and District Sports Hall of Fame (CDSHF) is a charitable organization formed in 2017 serving the communities of the Town of Cobourg, Alderville First Nation, and the Townships of Alnwick/Haldimand, Hamilton and Cramahe.
The mandate of the CDSHF is to recognize outstanding athletes and builders who have made significant contributions to their particular sport over the years.
The CDSHF is also mandated to collect, preserve and display sports memorabilia of significant interest to the identified communities.
The CDSHF is committed to identifying and documenting sports organizations, events, competitions and facilities that have been significant to the catchment area.
Sports Researcher and Archivist
Duties:
Sports Historical Research
Microfiche Material Retrieval
Photo Scanning
Research, identify and scan all sports articles listed for the time period from 1800 through 2025 using archived newspapers stored on microfilm and many other documents held at the Cobourg Public Library. Scans will be housed on flash drives or secured servers.
Should access to the Cobourg Public Library become unavailable, the focus of the project will shift to converting .pdf files to .jpg files which can be completed remotely by the participant.
Prepare a final report to be presented to the Board of Directors.
Requirements:
• Eligible for referral to the Canada Summer Jobs program
• Ideal candidate will be a Secondary School student
• Excellent communication, reading and technical skills.
• Have an interest in sports, history, research and journalism.
• Have well developed time management and organizational skills.
• Be able to work independently.
• Have access to a personal computer or cell phone with data.
• Be able to operate office equipment such as copiers and scanners.
• Be able to work from a Cobourg location
The participating students will be supervised by Board members as necessary. The students will have an orientation session, weekly work plan and regular supervision.
Research mentoring will be provided by a Board member who has extensive experience researching sports articles and is a published author. The mentor will develop the work plan and monitor the student’s progress throughout the project.
Technical mentoring will be provided a Board member who is a member of the Web Committee (https://cdshf.ca/). The mentor will develop the work plan and monitor the student’s progress for the duration of the project.
Duration: June 29 – August 23
35 hours/week
Salary: $18.00/hour
