Wage: $20 per hour
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Type of Employment: 18 week summer contract

JOB PURPOSE:
The Environmental Educator directly supports the successful planning, delivery, and evaluation of GreenUP Ecology Park school, camp, and summer programs. GreenUP Ecology Park is home to beautiful demonstration gardens, a native plant nursery, an urban honeybee yard, and diverse ecosystems that are used to facilitate learning experiences. These experiences will inspire an ongoing interest in the living world, local ecology, and sustainable living, and will teach skills for environmental stewardship and resiliency.

The Environmental Educator works as part of a small team to lead school programs, Earth Adventures Camp, and family programs throughout the peak season. They are also involved with program development, program material creation, and facility maintenance.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Program Delivery (80%)
• Deliver age- and stage-appropriate outdoor, environmental school, camp, and community programs
• Complete preparation, research, and training to deliver programming as required
• Build and share knowledge on relevant environmental issues, local natural species and spaces, and food production
• Lead youth in off-site excursions (e.g., to beach, other nearby facilities)
• Work with volunteers, park visitors, partner organizations, and key community stakeholders
• Participate in program evaluation
• Act as an ambassador of GreenUP when interacting with the public and promote positive participant experiences
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants at Ecology Park by effectively implementing all GreenUP Health and Safety procedures
• Comply with GreenUP policies and procedures

2. Program Development & Maintenance (15%)
• Assist and collaborate with fellow staff on the development of programs and materials as required
• Provide feedback and input to improve upon existing programs
• Assist in set-up, maintenance and take-down of children’s equipment and activity areas
• Tend to garden areas used for camp programming, as needed
• Attend and participate in GreenUP events and all-staff activities as needed

3. Administration (5%)
• Maintain accurate, complete participant and program paperwork and files
• Participate in staff and department meetings and training sessions
• Complete required organizational processes (e.g. timesheets, internal policy review, performance evaluations)

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experienced educator / counselor: Solid understanding of child behaviours and learning expectations for successful development and delivery of environmental education and outdoor activities. Excellent communication skills. A love of outdoor education, camps, and working with kids.
• Teamwork: Proven teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Ability to manage conflicts and setbacks with tact, respect, and professionalism. Ability to support team members to deliver exceptional programming in a positive work environment. Considerate of own well-being and that of others.
• Organization skills: Organized and able to manage time well. Strong attention to detail. Able to adjust and be flexible as needs and conditions change. Reliable and punctual.
• Initiative: Identifies necessary improvements, new directions and priorities for projects, and is proactive in bringing them forward with rationale and recommendations for implementation. Works within the limitations of a non-profit environment and adapts to change and opportunity.
• Critical-thinking: Ability to analyze problems systematically, asking good questions to identify underlying causes, and recommending potential solutions. Ability to work well under pressure.
• Environmentally-minded: Demonstrated commitment to the environment and community through previous work or volunteerism.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Two-plus years of experience working with children, and / or related post-secondary studies
• Strong knowledge of local native plants, wildlife, aquatic systems, ecosystems, and food production
• Knowledge of environmental issues, especially in the areas of waste reduction and climate change
• Familiarity with local species, landscaping and gardening best practice
• Ability to work in a variety of seasonal weather conditions for an extended period
• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current vulnerable sector police check

ASSETS:
• Fluency in French considered an asset
