Job Purpose: The Cycling Educator directly supports the successful planning, delivery, and evaluation of GreenUP’s Urban Bike Adventures camp, and other summer cycling programs. GreenUP is looking for an enthusiastic and organized educator to deliver cycling education to school-aged children and families. Covering topics including helmet fit, bike maintenance, rules of the road, bike handling skills and traffic safety, it is the Cycling Educator’s responsibility to deliver GreenUP’s cycling programs in a fun, accessible, and safe manner. The Cycling Educator works as part of a small team to lead Urban Bike Adventures Camp and other family programs throughout the peak season. They are also involved with program development, program material creation, and equipment maintenance.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Delivery (80%)
• Work alongside other GreenUP staff to deliver cycling skills and safety curriculum through the outdoor roaming cycling camp and community programs focused on cycling and climate action.
• Complete preparation, research, and training to deliver programming as required
• Build and share knowledge on relevant environmental issues
• Lead youth in excursions by bicycle (e.g., to beaches, trails, and other destinations)
• Work with volunteers, partner organizations, and key community stakeholders
• Participate in program evaluation
• Act as an ambassador of GreenUP when interacting with the public and promote positive participant experiences
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants by effectively implementing all GreenUP Health and Safety procedures
• Comply with GreenUP policies and procedures
2. Program Development & Maintenance (15%)
• Assist and collaborate with Program Coordinators and Educators on the development of educational materials and programs as required
• Provide feedback and input to improve upon existing programs
• Assist in the set-up, maintenance, and take down of equipment and activity materials
• Attend and participate in GreenUP events and all-staff activities as needed
• Maintain complete project records, file storage, and internal reports.
3. Administration (5%)
• Maintain accurate, complete participant and program paperwork and files
• Participate in staff and department meetings and training sessions
• Complete required organizational processes (e.g. timesheets, internal policy review, performance evaluations)
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experienced Educator / Counselor: Solid understanding of child behaviours and learning expectations for successful development and delivery of environmental education and outdoor activities. Excellent communication skills. A love of outdoor education, camps, and working with kids.
• Teamwork: Proven teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Ability to manage conflicts and setbacks with tact, respect, and professionalism. Ability to support team members to deliver exceptional programming in a positive work environment. Considerate of own well-being and that of others.
• Organization Skills: Organized and able to manage time well. Strong attention to detail. Able to adjust and be flexible as needs and conditions change. Reliable and punctual.
• Initiative: Identifies necessary improvements, new directions, and priorities for projects, and is proactive in bringing them forward with rationale and recommendations for implementation. Works within the limitations of a non-profit environment and adapts to change and opportunity.
• Critical Thinking: Able to analyze problems systematically, asking pertinent questions to identify underlying causes, and recommending potential solutions. Ability to work well under pressure.
• Environmentally Minded: Demonstrated commitment to the environment and community through previous work or volunteerism.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Two-plus years of experience working with children, and/or related post-secondary studies
• Confident cyclist with demonstrable riding competence
• Knowledge of environmental issues, particularly waste reduction and climate change
• Willingness to complete paid HopOn training to become a certified cycling coach
• Enthusiasm for cycling, with an understanding of cycling as a sport, form of transportation, recreational pursuit, and healthy form of exercise
• Ability to work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
• Ability to work in a variety of seasonal weather conditions for an extended period
• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current vulnerable sector police check
ASSETS:
• Fluency in French considered an asset
