Description: The Program Coordinator will lead active and sustainable transportation programs and projects that are school- and community- based. Our ideal candidate is a comfortable leader, eager to make change in their community. They are knowledgeable and passionate about active and sustainable transportation issues, policy, and community engagement, event planning and research. A key aspect of this position will be collaborating with community members, municipal staff, and key stakeholders to advance active transportation projects in the Peterborough region.
One of GreenUP’s goals is to help to build and support a community that encourages the use of active & sustainable transportation. We achieve this by informing good urban design, working with our partners to support people in choosing active transportation, and building a positive community culture. The Program Coordinator will plan and deliver a variety of programs related to our Active School Travel and Shifting Gears programs, working to deepen and grow the impact of these successful programs.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Program Coordination & Delivery (70%)
• Coordinate GreenUP school- and community- based programs that build culture and celebrate individual and collective active and sustainable transportation use.
• Educate residents about the impact transportation behaviour has on personal and environmental health, and support transitions to active and sustainable travel modes.
• Conduct engaging data-collection activities, organize data, and present information to stakeholders in a meaningful way.
• Liaise with schools, internal staff, and external agencies to implement active transportation projects, plans, and policies that focus on the 5 E’s: engineering, education, encouragement, evaluation, and equity.
• Facilitate connections and meetings throughout the Peterborough region between government agencies and stakeholder groups including school districts, law enforcement, local governments, principals, teachers, and parents to support active and sustainable transportation.
• Advocate for municipal and provincial transportation policy and legislative objectives, such as a commitment to complete streets, active transportation infrastructure, and cycling education.
• Collaborate with the Education and Active Transportation Program Manager to create a data collection framework and materials to evaluate program outcomes and impacts.
2. Program Administration (15%)
• Establish, support, strengthen positive relationships with partners throughout the region and across the province.
• Collaborate with the Communications Specialist and staff to design promotion and education materials for print and social media; develop seasonal and long-range marketing strategy; update website; and write GreenUP columns as required.
• Responsibly consults budgets and monitors spending.
• With the Program Manager, prepare program evaluations and reports for stakeholders and funders.
• Support program development including writing or planning for the purpose of grant applications and funding proposals.
• Maintain complete project records, file storage and internal reports.
3. Human Resources (8%)
• Adhere to GreenUP policy and procedures; complete required organizational processes (e.g. timesheets, internal policy review, performance evaluation).
• Fulfil all requirements for a Worker under the Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as those required by GreenUP’s own Health and Safety procedures.
• Support effective respectful working relationships among staff and promote an inclusive working environment where equity and diversity are centred. • Participate in GreenUP staff meetings and working groups, as needed.
• Work collaboratively with other GreenUP staff and volunteers to deliver programs effectively.
• Support recruitment and training of volunteers and placement students.
• Collaborate within GreenUP to support overall work and annual events.
4. Organizational Leadership (7%)
• Stay connected with and up to date on current transportation and urban design trends, research, tools and resources.
• Actively engage in professional and organizational development processes
• Act as an ambassador for GreenUP at community events and meetings, working with community groups and local businesses.
Qualifications:
• Post-secondary degree in a relevant field (e.g. transportation, planning, education, community engagement, health, project management, environmental studies).
• Minimum three years of relevant work experience
• Experience and knowledge of active transportation and related issues: cycling, transit, climate change, the built environment, urban planning, accessibility and equity, and public health.
• Demonstrated commitment to active and sustainable transportation, including cycling.
• Comfort with Microsoft Suite and cloud-based software.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions.
• Ability to ride a bicycle. • Provision of a current vulnerable police reference check upon hiring.
• Able and willing to meet all local school board requirements to work in schools, including those regarding immunization or screening.
ASSETS:
• CAN-Bike certification, or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Lived experience of marginalization or discrimination.

• Project Delivery: Demonstrated success in completing projects from conceptualization through to implementation. Organized and able to manage time well. Strong attention to detail.
• Teamwork: Proven teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Manages conflicts and setbacks with tact, respect, and professionalism. Able to support programs with evening and weekend shifts as required.
• Research and Analysis skills: Ability to meaningfully collect, compute, analyze and communicate research. Able to analyze problems systematically, asking good questions to identify underlying causes, and recommending potential solutions.
• Initiative: Identifies necessary improvements, new directions and priorities for projects, and is proactive in bringing that forward with rationale and recommendations for implementation. Works within the limitations of a non-profit environment and adapts to change and opportunity.
• Communications: Strong communication skills, with the ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively. Ability to deliver media statements on and off camera. Strong knowledge of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
