On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, the Government of Ontario passed Bill 160, An Act to amend the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 with respect to occupational health and safety and other matters. It received Royal Assent on June 1, 2011.
In Bill 160 will come:
The Implications:
- Increased mandatory training requirements for employers.
- The Minister of Labour will now establish standards for training programs and approve programs that meet those standards.
- A newer, more extensive training program is proposed for enterprises with 20 employees or more.
- Employers with 6-19 employees who must appoint a Health & Safety Representative will now be required to provide manatory training.
- This training can only be conducted by an 'Approved Provider'.
- the changes will require revisions of existing health and safety policies or new policies.
